Our artist displaying at the March concerts: Kathleen Walsh
About the artist and preview of exhibit on March 13 and 14:
When Home is the Sahel
For eight years we called Africa home. There, I worked, made friends, raised a family, and saw around me a beauty so startling that I was compelled to paint it.
The watercolor sketches were painted on site in the villages of Ouagadogou, Safane, and Tsiblile. The larger paintings are scenes from Mauritania and Burkina Faso. I work in mixed media using acrylics, oil pastel, graphite, and paper. The pieces from Mauritania have an underpainting of Sufi poetry to fully infuse the image with the beauty of its culture.
Burkina Faso means the “Land of People of Integrity.” Despite the unwavering dignity and hard work of Burkinabé, this country remains one of the poorest in the world. Catholic Relief Services has been working in Burkina Faso since 1960, linking farmers to markets, increasing knowledge of improved farming techniques and seed varieties, and giving girls incentives to attend school. Profits from the sale of these works will be donated to CRS Burkina.
