A Passion for Education
Arts exposure for young people is less today than in the past. The ASO is dedicated to providing an opportunity for today’s young people to become lovers of symphonic music at an early age.
Education Concerts
Alexandria Symphony Orchestra’s dynamic inter-arts curriculum unites Virginia’s Standard’s of Learning in Art and Music to better teach difficult concepts such as tempo, coloration, pitch. Kim Allen Kluge works with Alexandria curriculum specialists to create lesson plans for use in the classroom to accompany the music planned for the Education Concerts and Children’s Arts Festival in June. Through a generous grant the ASO hopes to extend this opportunity to students in surrounding jurisdictions.
A wonderful video choreography of the student artwork is planned and will be shown on large screen behind the Alexandria Symphony Orchestra as it plays. The images enhance the music, intensifying the concert experience. Children become composers and choreographers in the classroom as they prepare for the live ASO experience. The Education Concerts are presented at Schlesinger Center for all students in grades 3 to 6 in Alexandria City public schools.
Children’s Festival
The ASO performs a concert, which is open to the public, with a focus on children and the arts called “The Children’s Festival”. At this multi-arts event children can visit the Instrument Petting Zoo, where they can touch and “play” real musical instruments, and create artwork at various stations prior to the concert.
Dress Rehearsal for High School Students
High School Orchestra Students are invited to attend dress rehearsals in order to witness the work of professional musicians preparing for a concert.
Mentoring Program for High School Students
The ASO provides high school string instrument students with private lessons with ASO musicians and the opportunity to perform at the Children’s Festival alongside their ASO mentors each June.
Reduced Prices for Students and Parents
Due to generous donations from corporate and community supporters, the ASO offers $5 tickets at all regular concerts for youth ages 8-18!
